Adding New Hardware

If you are installing a new piece of hardware follow the instructions that come with it. Windows should automatically detect it. If it doesn't then you will need to do the following steps.

Windows XP

  1. Click on Start/Settings/Control Panel
  2. Double click on the Add New Hardware icon
  3. Click Next
  4. Click Next again
  5. Select “Yes” if you have already installed the hardware.
  6. Select No if you need to find the settings that Windows will allow. You will need to tell Windows what type of hardware you are installing. At that point Windows will show you what settings are available and you can then adjust your hardware to the desired settings.

Windows Vista

  1. Click the Windows Orb (the new “Start” button)
  2. Type “Add Hardware” (without quotes) in the text box at the bottom of the menu and hit enter
  3. Click Next
  4. Click Next again
  5. Once Windows finds your hardware (or you tell Windows what it is), click next until the drivers are installed and accept all default settings. You may need to provide a CD or location for the drivers.
When you complete these steps, your new device should work.
