Using Properties

Have you ever wondered how big that file is you're looking at, or when it was created? Is there a file you'd like to keep others from changing accidentally?

Try using Properties! By Right-clicking on any file, one option you'll get is “Properties.” When you click “Properties” a box will appear that gives you basic information about the file. At the bottom of the box, you can mark the file as “Read Only.” This will prevent someone from changing or writing over this file accidentally. Marking any of the other attributes Archive, Hidden, or System, is not recommended as these typically used by Windows for various tasks.

Now, perhaps even more useful, is using the Properties feature on desktop icons. Try right-clicking "My Computer" or "Recycle Bin", and chose Properties — see what you can do! And perhaps you have an Internet Explorer icon on your desktop — try using Properties on that. It’s a quick shortcut to changing your Internet preferences without having to open up Internet Explorer.

Also, using Properties on shortcuts allows you to change the icons or even assign it a “shortcut key” that makes another quick way to access the file.
